Elvis(2022)
4/10
I was initially excited about this movie because I greatly enjoyed some of Baz Luhrmann's other movies. But this also made me realize what doesn't click for me with this film. Luhrmann's flashy style works great when it bounces off of fictional people with fictional lives, making those fake lives look like a glamorous show doesn't need to be questioned. But Elvis is about...Elvis. And this sparkly bigger than life style of presentation just doesn't work with a real, nuanced, controversial person. The glitter and spectacle only glamorizes everything about Elvis to the point it feels shallow, and the rapid pace trying to cram in everything from his life only leaves nothing fully digested. It just feels like another vain cash grabby biopic about a musical icon, that wants to be taken seriously for the oscars but doesn't put in the effort.
Community
9/10
Now listen. Yes, Community IS my favourite show of all time. I am deeply attached to it. I try to get anyone I can to watch it because of it's rapid-fire, silly yet clever humour and simply how unique it is as a sit-com. It also has some of the best autism representation ever shown on tv. It's a really good time. It all makes it worth a watch. But the show is not perfect and that is very blatant in how it tackles romantic relationships, many of which being dumb, meaningless or wasted. Not to mention the absurdly creepy and uncomfortable relationship between Annie Edison and Jeff Winger, which makes Dan Harmons scandal regarding sexually harassing a female writer on the show unsurprising.
